In the last of the Grapefruit League games, the Red Sox played the Pirates in a good Chris Sale vs Jameson Tallion. After a quick score from the Sox, it turned into a pitchers duel for a few innings until the Sox turned the after burners on the secure the victory!
Red Sox News
Today Alex Cora sent down the last of his Spring Training cuts to pretty much make the opening day roster clear. We knew that there was going to be three bullpen spots available besides the Barnes, Braiser, Thornberg, Johnson and Hembree locks, and these are the three that made it:
- Hector Velazquez
- Brandon Workman
- Colten Brewer! One new face!
The Sox still have Bobby Poyner, Marcus Walden, and Jenrry Mejia who will be in Pawtucket just waiting for the call up, and im sure we will be seeing those three guys soon enough in Boston. The other three worth noting is Carson Smith recovering from injury, Darwinzon Hernandez who showed off his electric stuff this spring; but will probably be starting games in Portland to begin the year, and of course Steven Wright who probably would have taken Velazquez’s spot if not for his PED suspension.
While another day with Brock at 1B, I am guessing they figure he could have more time there than last year.
Sox making a habit out of scoring in the first, love to see it! Mookie lines a single (in what could have been a double) off the monster, Pedroia then hits an opposite field ground rule double to right, then JD singles to center field making it 1-0! Bogey then adds on to that lead with a Sac fly to left! Pedroia scores: 2-0 Sox!
Sox get back to it in the fourth: Bogey had an interesting hit, hitting a REALLY high ball, and the ball lands not top of the scoreboard which has a bit of a lip, and takes a second to come off of it! By the time the left fielder had it, Bogey is already at third! JBJ then doubles off the monster to drive him in, Brock then doubles to drive JBJ in! 4-0! Hembree took over in the 6th, not being sharp. Single-single-HR to make it 4-3.
After a lead off groundout, we had a Swihart single, and a JBJ walk and they both took off for a double steal: the catcher launched it over the 3B, and even the LF couldn’t grab it so it went all the way to the wall, scoring both of them. 6-3 Sox!
In the 8th the Sox batted around! Swihart with another single, Miller with a single, then Witte doubled off the monster for a 2-RBI double! Then another single by Monroe to score Witte and its 9-3! Two more runs come into score after a Medera double off the CF wall! Tavarez with a double down the line: 12-3!
- Sale looks as good as ever! Sale had 6 strikeouts over 5 solid scoreless innings pitched; looking great to be the Opening Day starter on Thursday!
- Hembree did not look good today AT ALL. After coming into the game, he allows two singles, gets one K, then allows a homer to strait away center field.
- Johnson looked solid over three innings. He did get into some trouble in the 7th, but worked out of the jam nicely. His curveball was really on.
Final Box Scores
