Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers 4/24

What a great sight. Seeing the Sox actually pummel an opponent. Before Thornburg allowed the three in the top of the ninth, the Sox had an 11-1 lead. See how it got there ⬇️

NEWS

  • Apparently a few days ago, Pedroia showed ERod a new grip to hold his slider. That is what that picture is above ⬆️ , it worked to perfection last night.
  • Pedroia was turning double plays and doing home to second sprints during the pre game work, maybe looking to a return soon.

Important Moments

The Sox got off scoring quickly this game which is always nice! 2-0 Sox after a blooper RBI hit and a hit and run by Vazquez has the Sox leading by 2 after 2! Eddy Rodriguez and Ross both got into a groove from the third through the 5th, Eddy actually had a no hitter through 5 until he allowed a single; but 8 Ks through 5 with only 3 total base runners is pretty dang good!

In the 6th, the Sox got a walk from benny who scored on a double high off the monster from Mookie! Moreland took a walk and JD hit one to the wall scoring Mookie from second! 4-0 Sox! The Tigers did get a run in on a sac fly after Eddy allowed a lead off double.

In the top of the 8th, Barnes was looking great, getting two quick strikeouts, but he might of gotten a little cocky because then he allows three strait base runners, but then strikes out the next batter on three pitches.

The Sox tacked on several more runs on an ugly the bottom of the inning. Chavis gets hit by the pitch, then steals second, and Vazquez drives him in. Benny then hits one to the monster driving Vazquez in! Moreland walked to load the bases and Bogaerts walked to force in a run! Then Devers takes ANOTHER WALK to force in Mookie! But guess what. Chavis comes to plate and sees four pitches. All four were balls! 9-1 Sox! verHagen just totally fell apart. Farmer comes into the game and singles just past the outreaching hands of the first baseman scoring 2!

Thornburg just couldn’t find the strike zone in the ninth when he allows 3 runs allowing a single, a double and two walks.

Final Score: 11-4 Red Sox!!

HIGHS

  • Eduardo Rodriguez was just completely lights out. He had a no hitter through 4 innings and just ended his day allowing five total base runners.
  • The Red Sox offense looked back on track scoring 6 runs before VerHagen just fell completely apart.
  • Betts went 2-4 pushing his avg up to .250!

LOWS

  • Thornburg is just getting lower and lower on the depth chart. Cora had told reporters that Walden has already passed him up, and after two walks, a single and a double, its going to be hard to keep him on the roster. His ERA has inflated to a frightening 7.59.

DOUBLEHEADER: Red Sox vs Detroit Tigers 4/23

NEWS

  • Eovaldi underwent the successful surgery to remove his loose bodies from his pitching elbow. If all goes as planned, he will begin a throwing program in two weeks to rebuild his pitching strength. He was out exactly two months from the time of surgery to back into games. Nate did say that last year they were playing it extremely cautious because he was still recovering from his TJ as well.
  • Darwinson Hernandez has been called up as the extra man allowed for the double header. He made his major league debut and pitched two and a third innings of scoreless ball, scattering four hits and walk. He was replaced by another hurler making his major league debut ⬇️
  • Sox optioned Bobby Poyner and recalled Travis Lakins for game 2. Lakins made his major league debut relieving Hernandez and pitching quite well himself! Two and two thirds innings of one run ball and looked great doing it. The one run did not prove to be costly as the Sox lost by two runs anyway.

Important Moments GAME 1

Sale got off to a great start with 6 Ks over his first three innings, and the Sox gots scoring in the bottom of the third as well! Vazquez, who DH’d, took a walk, and Lin who was showing bunt the first pitch, lined a double down the line! After a groundout to the third baseman by Leon and a tapper to the pitcher from Benny and the second and third situation with no outs was looking dire: Mookie changed that though! Mookie hit a single through the left side to make it 2-0 Sox!

Detroit does get a run in during the fourth after a walk, stolen base and then a double scored him. Grinder took Sale deep to lead off the fifth. It was definitely a mistake pitch, 90 MPH and middle middle. Hembree takes over in the 6th and immediately gives up a long dinger. 3-2 Tigers. Hembree couldn’t even get out of the inning and Thornburg has to come in to get the third out.

But guess what happens in the 6th? XANDER PUTS ONE OVER THE MONSTER!!! TIE BALL GAME!! Thornburg did finish really strong with 2 Ks over his inning and a third of work. Brewer takes over in the 8th but can’t get the job done. Allows two baserunners to get on, then with 2 outs, allows a two run double to Josh Harrison: 5-3 Tigers. Then allows another single bringing Harrison in: 6-3 Tigers. Poyner gives up a run also. Xander put one off the light tower again in the ninth to tack one more on, but they still fall in game 1.

Final Score: 7-4 Tigers

IMPORTANT MOMENTS GAME 2

Velazquez got off to a great start with three strong innings, but the Sox kept getting doubled up in the first two innings. In the bottom of the third, the Sox finally got a rally together loading the bases but bogaerts popped out to end the threat. In the fourth inning, Velazquez got in a jam and was pulled in favor for Walden. Walden enters the game with the bases loaded with only one out, and he allowed a bases clearing double just past the outreached glove of Devers.

The Sox got two on again in the fifth AND sixth innings and couldn’t push anyone through. The Sox have had every chance to be up in this game and just can’t get that clutch hit. Travis Lakins made his major league debut and did great. Pitched a couple solid innings! In the 7th inning, The Sox did push across a run, and in the 8th, Chavis hit his first major league dinger, and it was a MAMMOTH shot! Way out of Fenway. 3-2. Lakins did allow a run in the ninth on a double making it 4-2. You can’t strand 13 runners and expect to win a ball game. In the bottom of the ninth, JD did get on but no one even got him to second.

Final Score: 4-2 Tigers

HIGHS

  • Chris Sale still was not his dominant self, only pitching 5 innings. He did strike out 10 and only allow the two runs though. He is trending well, and hit 95 on the gun.
  • Bogaerts with 2 homers, looks to be hitting a groove!
  • Hernandez and Lakins both had their major league debuts combining for 5 IP of 1 one ball, and was just great.
  • Chavis hit a MOONSHOT over the monster for his first ML dinger! Check it out ⬇️

LOWS

  • As @RedSoxStats pointed out on twitter: “Barnes Brasier Workman Walden 42 IP, 11 ER, Everyone else in the pen 47 IP, 39 ER” … Yikes. That was after game 1.
  • Game 2: Sox offense couldn’t push across a run to save their lives, 13 stranded base runners. YOU. JUST. CANNOT. DO. THAT. Moreland and JD both left SIX runners on base. That just can’t happen

Yesterday’s game got rained out, and will be played as a double header today! Game 1 starts at 1:10 ET featuring Chris Sale vs Matthew Boyd, and game 2 at 7:10 ET featuring Hector Velazquez rivaling Spencer Turnbull.

NEWS

  • Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com had the following updates on the off day yesterday:

  • Eduardo Nunez is feeling better and hitting.

GET YA BROOMS READY!! SWEEP SWEEP IN EXTRAS

Important Moments

Two innings of a pitchers duel, Price lost the zone a bit allowing two baserunners to start the third. Battling back by striking out the next two but he does allow them to score when he lost the battle to Robertson allowing a double. Getting one of those back in the fourth when MItchy four bags lifted off sending a BULLET into the right field bleachers!

The sixth inning was very interesting as Glasnow got benny out to start the inning, but he allows an 0-2 single to Mookie, and got pulled. Glasnow was only at 76 pitches, as to the interesting move. The Rays brought in Kolareck for one batter who walked Pearce pinch hitting for Pearce, and then JD walked when Chaz Roe came into the game. With the bases juiced, Bogaerts lined a first pitch fastball into right center for 2 RBI and the lead! 3-2 Red Sox! Chavis grounded into a double play to end the threat though.

The Rays did tie up the ball game on a Pham dinger in the eighth which sends this game to extras. Nothing in the tenth but in the eleventh Devers hit a blooper to center field, and Chavis walked which prompted JBJ to drop down (a rather impressive) bunt moving both up a base. Vazquez then hits a ball to deep center for the sac fly scoring the winning run!

Final Score: 4-3 RED SOX

HIGHS

  • SWEEP getting back to only 5 games back of first place, and 2.5 games back of the Yankees!
  • Great outing for Price: 5 IP, 10 Ks and only allowed those two runs on the Robertson double
  • After exiting the game early on Saturday with back spasms, Mitch Moreland launched his 7th home run of year last night, clearly feeling better

LOWS

  • Barnes with another homer allowed which forced the need to go to 11 innings for the win

Red Sox @ TB Rays 4/20

WHAT. A GAME… WOW. JUST WOW.

NEWS

  • BREAKING NEWS: Starter Nathan Eovaldi has been placed on the IL after an MRI showed “loose bodies” in his pitching elbow. Nate told reporters that on Friday morning he could not even straiten his arm. They are looking at either a cortisone shot, or the more likely scenario would be minor surgery. The positive side is that this is apparently a pretty easy procedure. Eovaldi actually underwent this exact surgery last year about this same time. He was out exactly two months, but Nate himself said they took it extremely slow because he was coming off his second Tommy John. He expects to be back sooner than 2 months if all goes all planned.
  • Mitch Moreland exited the game after two at bats experiences back spasms. They officially have him listed as day to day, but we will definitely keep you updated if an IL stint is needed.

Important Moments

After two walks and a single to load the bases in the second, Leon comes to the plate and gets HIT by the first pitch to walk in a run! Benny comes to the plate next and CLEARS THEM ALL OFF WITH A GRAND SLAM!!! 5-0 RED SOX! Looking totally like the 2018 Sox of old, what a great sight to see.

The Rays did hit s few mistake pitches off Porcello, getting a HR and then two triples: making the score 5-2 after four innings! In the bottom of the fifth, Porcello got into a bit of trouble walking one, and then hitting Austin Meadows. The very next pitch he gets the ground ball to Devers for the 5-3 double play! It was a great play by Devers to end the inning. Hembree and Poyner couldn’t get it done, Hembree allowing a triple, and then Poyner came in and walked the first man and both scored after the fourth triple of the game for the Rays. Marcus Walden came in and K’d BOTH men to strand the tying run on third!!!

After a crazy bloop over into righty field allowing Pearce to get to second, JD walks, Bogey then hits a hard liner but in a pretty weird play, the Rays turned two. Check it out below ⬇️ Devers then popped out to end the inning. Two on with none out and the Sox score none. What a waste.

Barnes entrees the game in the bottom of that same frame, and has been nails so far; but Yandy Diaz takes him team to lead off the inning. Tie game. The Sox come storming back in the top of the ninth though to take the lead off of a JBJ single, a CHAVIS ROCKET DOUBLE FOR HIS MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT and then a sac fly for Benny’s 5th RBI of the game!! 6-5 Sox!

Bottom of the ninth, Braiser comes on to pitch. He does allow a single to the leadoff batter, he gets a flyout to RF for the first out, then Ks meadows!! Pham is the only man left…  but he singles to put two on. Adames get to 0-1 and… VAZQUEZ BACKPICKS FIRST BASE TO END THE GAME PICKING PHAM OFF!!!!! WHAT A WAY TO END THIS GAME WOW WOW WOW!!!!

Tap or click on that gif to listen to the actual audio of OB and Jerry’s reactions… Priceless…

Final Score: 6-5 RED SOX

HIGHS

  • The Bats came ALIVE  in this game! Bailing out the bullpen again, starting with a 5-0 lead after a BENNY GRAND SLAM!
  • Walden shutting the door on the Rays with the man on third, K’d both men he faced.
  • Michael Chavis had his major league debut in the ninth, tie ball game with a runner on. Tough situation right? Chavis BLASTS a double off one of the Ray’s best relievers to strait away center. OVER Kiermier’s head, one of the best center fielders in the game. It was hit THAT hard. Check it out ⬇️

LOWS

  • Bullpen can’t get the job done. After Porcello leaves the game at 5-2 in the sixth, Hembree and Poyner both blow it leaving the game much worse than they found it.
  • Poyner did not even record an out, and still got tagged for a run. ERA of Infinity ∞
  • Barnes did give up the home run which allowed the game to be tied up in the 8th, he did come back to strike out all three batters after. So its only a half low. His ERA on the season is still only a minuscule 2.16.

Final Box Scores

WHAT A GAME. WHAT A GAME.

Standings

OUT OF THE BASEMENT! ONLY 6 GAMES BACK! Best thing about baseball is how it’s played nearly everyday! Red Sox @ TB Rays 4/19

A win!! Wow, these feel good! Especially against the best team in baseball so far this year!

NEWS

  • MICHAEL CHAVIS HAS BEEN CALLED UP!!! Some have Chavis ranked as high as the number one prospect, but almost everyone have him at least in the top 3. While he is primarily a corner infielder, he has been taking reps at second as of late and he takes the place of injured Eduardo Nunez.
  • LINSANITY: in a surprising move, Lin AND Chavis have been called up. We knew one of the two would be called up, but with Pedroia hitting the IL and Nunez also, both have been recalled from AAA.

Important Moments

While the box score might not have Eddy Aces out there pitching well, he didn’t have great defense behind him, and several bloop shots were what got to him. A botched ball from Devers would have prolonged his outing at least through six with only 2 runs. Allowing a solo shot to Brandon Lowe, and then an RBI triple to Garcia in the next inning; the Rays got out to a 2-0 lead early.

The Red Sox did remember to pack their bats on the trip to Tampa! The Sox regained the lead in the fifth when Devers hit an RBI double, and then Christian Vazquez with ANOTHER dinger to put the Sox on top 3-2! That is Vazquez’s fourth homer of the season so far, already topping last years mark. His career high for a season is only 5 and Vazquez already has four! Who would have thought that Vazquez would be tied with JD a month into the season!!

An inning later and the Sox would tack on another run making it 4-2 with a JD single up the middle! The Sox strike out three consecutive to leave two on in a bit of a squander. In the bottom the frame is where Dever’s botched play comes into play. After Eddy allows a single to Meadows, a well struck ball just clanked off the heel of Dever’s glove in which could very well have been a double play. Both runners come into score on a Robertson double down the left field line. 4-4 after 6.

The top of the 8th is where the bats did really shine! Betts took one of the Ray’s relief ace’s deep 424′ to strait away center. Moreland then comes up to the plate and goes BACK TO BACK pulling a ball to left!

Final Score: 6-4 RED SOX

HIGHS

  • MOOKIE MIGHT BE GETTING HOT: with a double and a HR, Mookie might have regained his swing again!
  • Vazquez is starting to swing it well again this year
  • Lin hit a single in his first AB back in the majors
  • Barnes came into the game in the 8th to face the heart of the Ray’s lineup and got a 1-2-3 inning with 2 Ks!

LOWS

  • Brandon Workman came into the game and struggled with his command again, walking two in an inning and two thirds.
  • As young as Devers is, he still needs to concentrate on actually catching the ball before making his move to get the double play. Head down and secure the ball.

Red Sox Off Day News

NEWS

  • DUSTIN PEDROIA HAS HIT THE IL: Last night the Red Sox announced that Dustin Pedroia has landed on the IL. After hearing a “pop” from his surgically repaired knee, the Sox immediately pulled him in Wednesday’s game. He visited a doctor in NY and that’s when they decided to give him some time on the IL.
  • Marcus Walden has been recalled from AAA in the corresponding move.
  • Needing another second baseman, it is highly anticipated that Tzu Wei Lin will get the call up. Many of Red Sox Nation has been calling for top prospect, including myself, to be recalled instead. It is not a slight in any way against Lin but Chavis in no way can be worse defensively at 2B than Nunez. Lin is an awesome defender and has a solid bat. Give me Chavis.

Good thing the off day is OVER! Today’s game is at 7:10 PM ET featuring Eduardo Rodriguez! TB Rays have not announced a starter for tonights game. It could be a safe bet to maybe see an opener or bullpen game. Stay tuned and I’ll tell you all about it. Talk to you then 🤙🏽

Red Sox @ NY Yankees 4/18

Today’s game was just heartbreaking. Eovaldi had a spectacular start, but the bullpen just plain blew it.

NEWS

  • Pedroia came out the game after his second inning at bat, it does NOT sound optimistic. He will be visiting a NY doctor to examine it after he felt “something weird”. Cora said after the game that he had never seen Pedey that down. It’s not sounding good at all.
  • Due to Pedey’s situation, Cora said they will most likely need 2B help for the Rays series, Tuz-Wei Lin is the most likely candidate, with maybe top prospect Michael Chavis if the Sox see Pedroia needing lots of time to recover.
  • Holt is looking to get another lens to help his eye. Still isn’t 100% with seeing the ball properly.
  • Benintendi was still out of the lineup on Wednesday trying to get that foot healed.

Important Moments

The Red Sox were looking golden after a first inning dinger from JD, and a two run homer for Vazquez in the second making the game 3-0 and Eovaldi was just Strait DEALING. He ran into a little trouble in the fourth allowing a run on a Clint Frazier double, but got out the jam quickly.

Eovaldi left the game after the 6th inning only allowing the one run and getting 6 strikeouts! Workman came in and totally just crapped himself on the mound. Walking two men and a single while only getting one out, leaves the bases loaded for Braiser to come try to salvage the inning. Braiser missed his spot and Brett Gardner takes him deep for a grand slam putting the Yankees on top 5-3.

The Red Sox did have a chance to make a comeback in the 8th against Adam Ottovino but Nunez of all people just had to ruin it. The Sox rally against one of the nastiest pitchers in baseball to get the bases loaded, but Nunez flails at a first pitch nearly in the dirt for a weak pop out. This came directly after an awesome AB by Moreland working the count for a walk. Nunez HAS to be patient there. Boy I hope Pedroia is alright. I cannot STAND Nunez.

Final Score: 5-3 Yankees

HIGHS

  • Eovaldi pitched to perfection over 6 innings, with all of his pitches working
  • Martinez continues to smash after a 2-3 game with a HR and a walk
  • Pearce made a DIVING play which help secure the score at the time to 3-1 ⬇️

LOWS

  • Bullpen… bullpen… bullpen… Workman who has been very solid in the early goings just fell completely apart loading the bases against a Yankee lineup who does not even feature Stanton, Sanchez, Bird, Andujar, Hicks, Gregorius or even freaking Tulowitzki. Come on…
  • Mookie has lowered his average to .200 after an 0-4 game.

Red Sox @ NY Yankees 4/16

Well, another terrible game. I was seriously thinking that they were going to be no hit by Paxton. Instead they got two hit by him, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

NEWS

  • BREAKING NEWS: Blake Swihart has been designated for assignment and they have brought Sandy Leon up from AAA to catch Sale. They obviously thought that Leon could be some savior for the pitching staff but as you’ll read on, he obviously wasn’t so far.
  • Holt started a rehab game in Pawtucket today, after a few more they are looking to activate him in the next few days if all goes well

Important Moments

After the first two innings looked to be a good ole fashioned pitchers duel, but the Yankees destroyed that in the third after Gardner doubled, and then allowed two singles making the score 2-0. In the bottom of the frame, the Red Sox had their best chance at making the game close:

Mookie took a great AB for a walk, and Bogey hit one about an inch from being out and set up the inning. Second and third with the 3-4-5 hitters and no outs, but they totally squandered this chance by getting out in order. Look how close Bogey was for his 3rd HR of the year ⬇️

It just went downhill after that, Clint Frazier lead off the fourth with a ball hit exactly like bogey’s but of course his went out. Hard hit balls everywhere off Sale. Nunez couldn’t catch pickoffs, other defensive misplays and the Sox really just did not look great.

Recently recalled Erasmo Ramirez came in to start the 6th and immediately got pummeled. Allowing a 3 run dinger to Mike Tauchman who no body even knew coming into the game, and allowing a lead off homer to Torres in the 7th.

Final Score: 8-0 Yankees

HIGHS

  • Sale was hitting at 97 MPH on the gun, and had more bite to his slider, but still just could not locate anything. He sat middle middle most the game

LOWS

  • It seemed that Sale was throwing heat seeking missiles that were just looking for the middle of the plate. Yes he was throwing heat, but big leaguers can hit it out when its down the middle
  • Nunez missed several plays that he should have made
  • Leon’s debut was one to forget, two Ks and a weak pop out, but don’t expect that to improve much
  • Pearce going 0-4 with 2 Ks, he was brought in to be the lefty smasher, and his average is down to .100. Just terrible

Red Sox vs Orioles 4/15

Another terrible loss for the Sox. The bullpen was the letdown today.

NEWS

  • While technically could have been activated today off the IL, Brock Holt has remained on in the rehab process. He is set to see a few AAA games to ensure his eye has healed from being scratched by his son Griffey.
  • Christian Vazquez was batting ninth in Monday’s lineup, while that isn’t necessarily precarious, the position that was listed next to his name was. For some reason he had a “”2B” instead of a “C”. With JBJ still sick, and Cora wanting to give Benny some time off the foot that was nailed by a foul ball, Vazquez played second base! He actually played there fairly well! Started a double play and got a couple other putouts.

Important Moments

The Red Sox offense could not do anything against the Oriole Starter Dan Straily. Straily had come into the game with a astronomical ERA of 19.29. The entire approach that had given Mookie and Co. their rings in 2018, has now gone away and have become one of the worst teams at swinging at pitches in the zone.

Velazquez started the game and went 3 IP with only one run allowed but Walden takes over in the fourth and looks fine to start, but then they Oriole batters got to him in the fifth. Allowing two baserunners on, one scoring, then Dwight Smith takes Walden deep right to Pesky’s pole in right. It was a rinky dink HR but it still counts as a moonshot. Walden leaves the game 4-0 Orioles.

Brewer pitches a clean 6th, and Hembree takes over in the 7th, allowing a double, then a HR, Orioles further their lead to 6-1. The Red Sox got one run in the 5th by groundout by Pearce. Thornburg couldn’t even keep them from scoring in the 9th, allowing Smith to double in two more.

Final Score: 8-1 Orioles

HIGHS

  • JD hasn’t lost his stride. Going 2-4 with a double in yesterday’s game raising his AVG to .344

LOWS

  • Bullpen imploded. Allowing 7 runs on 8 hits, and walking 3 against one of the worst lineups in the bigs, the ORIOLES
  • Sox offense could not push across more than one run against a man whose ERA was nearing 20 coming into the game.
