DAVEY TINGLE FINGERS IS BACK

NEWS

  • JBJ did not play because of the flu that Cora found out about during BP. Immediately removed him from the team to stop the potential spread of it.
  • Benny hit a ball hard directly off his foot yesterday, doesn’t look like he will be playing this morning. X Rays came back negative but is listed as day to day
  • There are lots of rumors of today’s game being postponed due to lots of rain in the area. We will keep you posted

Important Moments

Right from the first inning, you could tell that Price was on. Hitting his spots and painting the corners. Price ended his day after 7 innings of 3 hit ball and no runs allowed. Vintage Davey tingle fingers.

Xander went on a tear today attributing to all four runs! It was a 1-0 game after a sac fly from him in the fourth, and Price didn’t let anything come in. Xander wanted to add some insurance runs in the 8th when he drove one to strait away center with Mookie and JD on to make it 4-0 and give some breathing room to Barnes who comes in the close out the game

Final Score 4-0 RED SOX

HIGHS

  • David Price throwing a three hitter over 7 innings and 7 strikeouts
  • Xander Bogaerts going 2 for 3 with a sac fly and a dinger
  • After fouling the ball of his foot; Benny stayed in and hit a double

LOWS

  • Nunez with another defensive misplay, and leaving FOUR men on base today, is furthering frustrations. His bat still hasn’t come around and he is batting .184 so far this year. If you can’t contribute on offense OR defense, then you are actively detracting from the team
  • Pedroia went 0-4 lowering his average to .133

Red Sox vs Orioles 4/13

In a completely utter disgrace of a game, the Sox lose to the Orioles of all teams. Physical mistakes, mental mistakes, misplays and terrible baseball. Worst loss of the year.

Important Moments

Right from the first inning Porcello didn’t have his command, nor the normal break and movement of his pitches. He was rather spectacular at limiting the damage, only allowing three runs on ELEVEN baserunners. Chris Davis broke his streak of going 0-54 with a 2 RBI single in the first.

The Sox tied up the game in the bottom of the 3rd on a Vazquez HR (he has looked better this year so far, offensively at least), and it stayed tied up for two innings: 2-2. In which was the strength so far, the Bullpen was who failed the Sox today. Brewer who had been so solid just fell apart when he was called upon in the 6th. Walk-Single-Walk-Single-Single and he was pulled leaving the game at 6-3.

Walden pitched two solid innings but his defense did not help out his cause. The Sox scored two more on a Vazquez double to score Devers and Pedey. Pedroia looked like his vintage self with a diving play in the 8th.

HIGHS

  • Vazquez had a sweet swing on Saturday having 4 RBI (out of the 5 total runs scored)
  • Thornburg had a clean inning with a K
  • Porcello limiting the damage

LOWS

  • Brewer just falling completely apart not even getting ONE out
  • Only 2 true errors but there were several mental mistakes, misplayed balls and just plain bad execution
  • The Red Sox were being 1 hit until the 6th inning

Red Sox vs Orioles 4/12

What got a little scary in the end, the Red Sox pulled through for their first back to back wins of the year!

Important Moments

Eduardo Rodriguez was nothing short of spectacular for 6 innings, then lost some of his command in the 7th allowing a homer. He should not have gotten that far though, as on a pickoff play at second would have been the end of the inning if Bogaerts doesn’t drop the ball.

The Red Sox got to an early 1-0 lead with a Benny Biceps HR into the monster, and then scored two more on ROCKETS off the bats off Moreland, Bogaerts and Nunez tallying up to 3-0! They held that 3-0 lead until the homer that shouldn’t be in the 7th.

The Sox added some insurance runs in the 8th with contributions coming from JD, Bogey, Nunez singling JD in, and then JBJ with the Sac fly: 6-2. Thornburg came in and allowed a MOONSHOT over the monster to Renato Nunez after a walk to Mancini closing the gap a little to 6-4 but Braiser came in to close the door.

Final Score: 6-4 RED SOX

HIGHS

  • AMAZING PLAY by JBJ off the center field wall! Scaling it like Spider-Man. Check it out ⬇️
  • Moreland kept his hot streak going 2-4 with a double!
  • Bogaerts going 3-4 with a double!

LOWS

  • After pretty much sailing through the first 6 innings, Eduardo Rodriguez couldn’t keep it together allowing a double and then a HR.
  • Thornburg didn’t even get an out after walking the first man and then immediately allowing a homer OVER the monster.

Red Sox vs Blue Jays 4/11

This game was a weird but an extremely fun game to watch (after the third inning), with some pitching struggling but getting 4 double plays in 5 innings. Super strange…

Important Moments

Well this game didn’t start out great: Eovaldi being very wild and not hitting his spots allowing two homers making for a 5-0 ball game. But then Red Sox did make a great comeback in the third! Mookie starts it off, JD hits one off the wall to bring him in, then Devers smokes to the wall, and then Pedey gets his first RBI in route to bringing the score back within 2 making the game 5-3

Sox got some luck in the 5th, allowing the base runners to move up two bases after two passed balls, bringing the score within 1! In the 7th, clutch Moreland tied up the ballgame with a dinger! Braiser unfortunately allowed a dinger of his own giving up the lead. It was a solid pitch, a splitter down below the zone, but Galvis golfed it out.

There was some magic in the 9th when Mookie walked to allow Moreland to slam a double off the center field wall to tie it up AGAIN! Mitchy Clutch Bags! they Intentionally walked JD, Bogey had some good takes to get the walk to load the bases for Devers! The kid then hit a high chopper over the second baseman’s head for the WALK OFF!

Final Score: 7-6 RED SOX

HIGHS

  • Huge comeback win and walkoff!
  • Pedroia got his first RBI of the season!
  • Brewer’s curveball is NASTY. Definitely one of the best on the team

LOWS

  • Eovaldi couldn’t throw strikes walking four men, and allowing two dingers, but aside for the third inning; he got four double plays (in only FIVE innings) which helped him get out of most of his jams

Ozzie Albies – Extended

Well, it is STILL extension season. Yesterday the Atalanta Braves extended their all star second basemen to a 7-year, $35MM deal. Yes, while that is still a *ton* of money, it is quite controversial because of how it could potentially severely limit the earnings power of Albies, but also his young teammate Acuna who just got extended also.

Jeff Passan – State of the Market

After the Albies extension yesterday, Passan of ESPN.com had a series of tweets explaining his position on why the Brave’s duo of extensions could very well hurt baseball. It was a series of 9 tweets; basically stating that because these young players have singed so many free agent years away for comparatively little money, they are not only hurting their own earning power, but for so many generations of ball players to come.

He also goes on to blame the Braves, but really the market overall, for scaring these young players in taking a smaller amount than they are really worth. They see how sparse the free agent market is, and they don’t want to test it out; therefore taking less money.

Clayton Kershaw – Return

Bill Plunkett of the Orange Contry Register tweeted today that Kershaw will be activated Monday and start for Los Angeles. Great news for the generational pitcher to get back on a major league mound after two minor league rehab starts!

Notes

  • Victor Caratini to undergo a CT scan for his hand
  • Former Red Sox reliever Ben Taylor picked up by Diamondbacks
  • Bud Norris’ deal with the Nationals fell through

Business of Baseball – Non-guaranteed Contract

Definition

Players who are on arbitration (unless specified at the time of the agreement), Minor League or split contracts are not fully guaranteed their salaries.

Players on arbitration contracts who are cut on or before the 16th day of Spring Training are owed 30 days’ termination pay (based on the prorated version of his agreed-upon arbitration salary). A player cut between the 16th day and the end of Spring Training is owed 45 days’ termination pay (based on the prorated version of his agreed-upon arbitration salary). The arbitration salary becomes guaranteed if the player is on the 25-man roster when the season begins.

A player on a split or Minor League contract will earn the prorated portion of his Major League salary for time spent on the Major League roster. Clubs can also sign players to non-guaranteed contracts but still place them on the 40-man roster. Those contracts become guaranteed upon the player making the Major League roster out of Spring Training, but he may also be cut prior to Opening Day. Such cases are identical to arbitration contracts in that the club would owe either 30 or 45 days’ worth of termination pay, depending on the time at which the player is released.

Examples

Prior to the 2016 season, the Angels signed Craig Gentry to a split contract and Al Alburquerque to a non-guaranteed contract. Each player was added to the 40-man roster, but neither player’s contract was fully guaranteed at the time of the signing. Both contracts were contingent upon the players making the Major League roster in Spring Training.

Red Sox vs Blue Jays 4/9

There was a great pre game ceremony celebrating the 2018 World Series Champions. It was a fun time with everyone showing off their rings, and even had a visit from Manny, Ortiz, Pedro, and a few stars from the Patriots! Gronk and Edelman were the headliners that showed off the SIX trophies the Pats have had. Such a flex on the other cities that Boston can celebrate MULTIPLE championships on one day. It was quite the game if you like offense, it was back and forth the whole game. Sox again had so many chances but couldn’t get it done.

NEWS

  • Dustin Pedroia was activated and got a hit to start the rally in the 9th!
  • Tzu-Wei Lin was optioned for Pedroia
  • Jerry Remy was back in the booth alongside Eck and OB. The three man booths are really entertaining. I hope there is more of the this upcoming year

Important Moments

Sox got off to a great start with Mitch Moreland railing one into the bullpen to put one on the board in the first. They also got one in the second after Pedroia hit into a double play but Bogey still scored. Sale was cruising through the first and second, but ran into a bit of trouble in the second allowing three singles. I don’t think they could have been more weakly hit but just found every hole possible. Sale was looking great in the first hitting 95 on the gun which means his changeup is just that much more effective.

Sale lost the led in the fourth when he allowed another two singles and two runs, one of which was a passed ball on Vazquez. The Blue Jays then got a third run in the inning when Gurriel STOLE HOME. Sale went in full windup with him on third and he went immediately. Sale was just been singled to death.

Sox bring it within 2 runs after a HR into the monster to lead off the 6th inning! After a Bogey walk and Hernandez can’t make the catch in LF, Bogey comes around to score making it 6-5! On to the 7th and  Sox pithing allowed two walks and a single for another run to score. The Red Sox do make another mini comeback in the eighth getting a run back, but still fail to push more across.

The 9th inning was quite the worst showing for the Sox. After a Pedroia single, and JBJ having a great AB to take a walk; Swihart flys out on one pitch, Benny hits a weak pop up, and then Mookie’s AB was the worst of them all. He takes a ball RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE (⬇️ See Below ⬇️) , Giles then throws three uncompetitive pitches, then Mookie takes a hanging slider right in his wheelhouse, and then strikes out swinging on a low slider. Horrible look to end the game.

HIGHS

  • Thornburg took over for Sale and pitched two innings where he was pretty much dominant. He allowed a double off the wall off pretty much one mistake, but did not cost him. No one else could touch him.
  • Pedroia got his first hit back, igniting the almost rally in the 9th
  • Walden struck out two in a clean inning of work

LOWS

  • Sale didn’t get the results he wanted, and the steal of home sucked. Sale didn’t pitch *bad* as his box score would say. He just allowed too many weakly hit singles that found holes.
  • SO many runners stranded. Each game they are getting the ducks on the pond, just are not driving them in.
  • Hembree couldn’t get the job done
  • Workman couldn’t get the job done
  • Barnes couldn’t get the job done

Final Box Scores

Another game the Red Sox should have won. You can’t leave TWELVE runners on base. Can’t do it.

HOME OPENER DAY

NEWS

  • Dustin Pedroia is still eyeing being activated today. Cora has said that it will be nearly a game time decision. With Brock Holt on the IL the Nunez DFA is not looking good, sadly.
  • Confusingly enough, there is another off day tomorrow. Not fun AT ALL and I’m already dreading it and I still have baseball today.

Red Sox @ Arizona G3 4/7

In one of the shortest games of the year at 2 hours and only 29 minutes, Mitchy Four Bags wins it all with one swing of the bat!

NEWS

  • Dustin Pedroia played nine innings yesterday and is flying home today to have one last physical to see if it’s time to be activated! Cross your fingers!

The Lineup

Mookie had the day off. He did come in later in the game for his defense.

Important Moments

In what seemed to be the biggest flaw of the Red Sox; the bullpen has been one of the lone bright spots of the team so far. If you remove the injured appearance of Brian Johnson, the bullpen has a 2.22 ERA so far this year. Barnes, Braiser and Workman have been nothing short of dominate and in yesterday’s bullpen game it showed no less. 9 innings of goose eggs.

The Red Sox had two chances in the third and the ninth but couldn’t push anything across. The lone but winning run of the day came on a Mitch Moreland HR just sneaking over Adam Jones’ glove in right.

HIGHS

  • Benny has pushed his average to nearly .300 with a 2-4 night
  • Velaquez came in to pitch and was nothing short of solid. 3 IP of 1 hit ball and we couldn’t have asked for anything more
  • Barnes pitched TWO innings with no baserunners and two strikeouts

LOWS

  • Bradley who I pegged as a comeback player of the year candidate is hitting a paltry .184 this year.

Final Box Scores

Today is an off day, but on Tuesday we have Chris Sale vs Matt Shoemaker! Stay tuned and i’ll catch ya then. Talk to you then 🤙🏽

Red Sox @ Arizona 4/6

Red Sox had their chances. Just did not pull through again. Mookie, Bogey, Vazquez and JBJ had three left on base en route to getting walked off.

NEWS

  • Two players were placed on the Injured list today: Brian Johnson and Brock Holt
  • Brock Holt has a scratched cornea which apparently came before opening day, caused by his adorable son Griffey. He thought he could play through it but decided it was best for the team not to. He said it was difficult for him to pick up the spin of the ball while batting.
  • Brian Johnson has left elbow soreness. Told reporters that it was effecting his finish in his mechanics.
  • Tzu Wei Lin and Marcus Walden have been called up to fill the spots of the above people. Lin had an AB in Saturday’s game.

The Lineup

Nunez and Pearce starting vs a righty in Luke Weaver is interesting move. In Cora we trust though. Maybe Weaver has reverse splits, that would be a very logical move.

Important Moments

Sox struck again first in the second inning, leading off with a walk Bogey got on. Devers single and a Nunez ground out got the first run on the board. To get to the pitcher; Vazquez was walked but Price actually hit one past the first baseman for an RBI single and then benny doubled making it 3-0 Red Sox!

There is some speculation that batting, and then running the bases messed with Price a bit, being so unfamiliar: in the bottom of that same inning, right after Price ran, the DBacks put a 4 spot on the board taking the lead. Hit city: Single, pop out, double, single, double, K, then a single and it was 4-3 Arizona after 2.

The 7th inning was the big let down of the game when Mookie had the bases loaded and only gets a sac fly, then Moreland walks to re load the bases only to have Xander ground out. Two HUGE chances to push lots of runs across and can’t do nearly anything. Tie Game. After a quick strikeout from Brewer, the DBacks put together three strait singles to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth.

Final Score: 5-4 Arizona

OFFENSE

  • Benny went 2-3 with a walk

PITCHING

  • Price had a solid start, nothing spectacular but the 2018 Sox would have won the game with that start
  • Workman was great, getting several swing and misses with his curve striking out one
  • Braiser did allow a hit, but was on point as well
  • Brewer pitched since it was tie game, and started well, but then went on to allow three hits, the last of which was the walk off

Final Box Scores

Yikes

Red Sox @ Arizona 4/5

Well the last pitcher for the Red Sox in yesterday’s game was Nunez. That is how the game went.

The Lineup

Just a normal scheduled off day for JBJ. He did come in for a pinch hitting appearance later in the game. Being in a NL Stadium with the pitcher hitting makes for some off days to make sure JD stays in the lineup. I still expect to see at least one of the next two days without JD.

Important Moments

Swihart got the scoring going in the third! Benny doubled him in making it 1-0 Sox. Porcello struggled in the bottom of the frame allowing three on. The Sox traded a run for two outs tying up the ballgame. Porcello continued to struggle in the fourth allowing for a HR, then a double, walk and then the freaking pitcher got an RBI single. By the end of the inning it was 5-1.

The pitching woes continued in the 6th when back to back singles lead off the inning. Johnson was pitching this time: then getting a double from Jones making it 8-1, a few batters later Marte gets up and hits a Grand Slam furthering the score to 12-1. Thornburg was solid coming in during the 7th, only allowing one baserunner.

In the 9th, the Sox did score some more runs. After pitching a successful eighth allowing only one HR, Nunez led off the inning with single, Mookie then hit a double setting up Mitchy Two Bags hitting a three run homer!

Final Score: 15-8

OFFENSE

  • Mookie and Mitch Moreland both hit home runs in this one
  • Swihart is still hot going 2-4 with a 2 run double. He is batting .500 so far.

PITCHING

  • Porcello had three quick innings, but things unravelled quick in the fourth and fifth innings
  • Johnson took over and got out of Porcello’s mess in the fifth, but got in his own mess In the 6th. There was a hit parade resulting in a grand slam and by the end of Johnson’s outing the score was 14-1.
  • Thornburg pitched well, allowing a single but completed the inning on 18 pitches
  • Eduardo Nunez had a good inning. Yes, I did say Eduardo Nunez. Regretfully so: did get two quick outs but then got tagged for a home run. Watch ⬇️

Final Box Scores

Yikes.
